SCHOOL COUNSELING SERVICES

Reef Sunset Unified School District currently employees three School Counselors, Two Prevention Intervention Specialists, and four Wellness Specialists. 

School counselors and Specialists are trained to help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students.

Within RSUSD, School Counselors Work With Students to:

  • Support and improve behavioral functioning on the school campus

  • Provide direct one-on-one instruction on appropriate social skills, friendship skills, anger management, self-regulation and

    problem solving through group services.

  • Conduct social/emotional/behavioral lessons in small groups and also in the classrooms. 

  • Provide individual services to students with significant behavioral issues

  • Increase positive behavior interactions with peers and staff

Within RSUSD, School Counselors Work With Students and Their Families to:

  • Serve as coordinator of services

  • Evaluate eligibility for Section 504 services (within a multidisciplinary team)

  • Create plans to support general education students who are experiencing behavioral issues within the school setting

  • Provide parents with information to enhance academic, social emotional, and behavioral successes for students and families. 

  • Make referrals and help coordinate community support services

School psychologists are trained to help students succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally. They collaborate with educators, parents, and other professionals to create safe, healthy, and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school, and the community for all students.

Within RSUSD, School Psychologists work with students to:

  • Increase achievement by assessing barriers to learning and determining the best instructional strategies to improve learning

  • Support and improve behavioral functioning on the school campus

Within RSUSD, School Psychologists work with students and their families to:

  • Identify and address learning and behavior problems that interfere with school success

  • Evaluate eligibility for special education services (within a multidisciplinary team)

  • Support students' social, emotional, and behavioral health

  • Provide parents with information to enhance parenting skills

  • Make referrals and help coordinate community support services

    • Guide implementation of Behavior Intervention Plans

  • Consults with outside agencies to provide services for students.
